1. Measure the usable board
Start with the real usable width and length of the board, not only the nominal size. Subtract saw kerf, edge defects and any safety margin required by your workshop.
2. List the pieces
Write down each piece width, height and quantity. Group identical pieces, but keep different dimensions separate so the layout can test rotation and avoid false capacity estimates.
3. Test rotation and gaps
A simple grid is useful for a first estimate, but the final cut plan needs gaps between pieces and a direction that respects grain, texture or veneering. Compare layouts before committing to the board.
4. Read the result
The useful outputs are pieces placed, used length or area, occupancy and waste. Treat the result as a planning estimate and confirm it against the actual board, saw and grain direction.
